2008 Traveling Exhibit

Explore the art and science of color through imaginative hands-on experiences and opportunities for creative play. This ingenious traveling exhibit (from the folks who created last year’s exhibit, Contraptions A – Z) will engage all ages from toddlers to adults. Come and visit the Color Playhouse, create color effects with the Color Spinners, make a Color Storm and more.
Join us in the Main Library Youth Services Room from May 12, 2008 through June 10, 2008. The Color Play exhibit is made possible through a generous donation from the Friends of the West Bloomfield Township Public Library.
To better accommodate as many attendees as possible, all programs will be held at the Main Library in order to utilize the larger facilities and parking. Additional parking is available behind the Main Library.
Some programs require advanced registration; registered programs are limited to West Bloomfield and contract community residents (Orchard Lake, Keego Harbor, and Sylvan Lake). Group registrations are not accepted. If you require special hearing equipment or a sign language interpreter for any program, please contact the Main Library at least one week prior to the program.
For Parents
Parent University
Parent University continues with new workshops for 2008. All parents want their children to succeed in school and be the best possible students, but what can parents do at home to ensure their children’s success at school?
The West Bloomfield Township Public Library and the West Bloomfield School District are proud to present Parent University, 2007 – 2008. This program series is designed to help parents become “learning coaches.” You don’t have to become an expert in math, language arts, science or social studies for your child to be a competent and confident student. You do need to be involved in your child’s school experience. Parental involvement is critical to student success.
Here’s your chance to learn what you can do at home to instill a love of learning in your child and help your child be successful in elementary and middle school.
At Parent U, learn how to:
- Make your home a supportive learning environment
- Develop positive attitudes in your children toward learning and school
- Teach children how to manage their time, listen and focus better in school
- Improve your child’s study and test-taking skills
- Improve memory and critical thinking skills
- Prepare a child to learn to read before entering school and encourage children of all ages to read at home
No registration is required. Parents are invited to attend one or all of the workshops.
Good Readers Become Good Learners:
How to motivate your child to read
Presented by: Susan Crocker, Principal; Julie Abeska, Media Specialist; Cheryl Blacklock, Reading Consultant; all from Doherty Elementary School. Penny Neef, Coordinator of Youth Services at the West Bloomfield Township Public Library.
Of all the skills necessary for school success, none is more important than reading. The large majority of schoolwork involves reading, and if a child cannot read well, he or she may struggle throughout school. Learn how reading is taught in school and how to use time at home to prepare children for reading and school success.
