eBooks General Information

eBooks are digital versions of books that can be viewed on your computer. eBooks are available to residents of West Bloomfield, or one of our contract communities, with a valid library card. The West Bloomfield Township Public Library offers eBooks from two different sources, which are:

  • Metronet Online Lending Library (Overdrive)
    • 24/7 access to over 1800 ebook titles in the Adobe and Mobipocket formats. A wide variety of genres are available in this collection including: fiction, mystery, romance, science fiction, teen and childrens, and non-fiction.
    • Either Adobe Reader 6, 7, or 8 with Adobe Digital Editions or Mobipocket Reader is required to download and view MOLL eBooks, depending on the format the title is in.
    • Help with Adobe eBooks
    • Help with Mobipocket eBooks
    • eBooks check out for 21 days and automatically check themselves back in. Holds can be placed on eBooks that are checked out, and you will be notified via email when they are available.
    • eBooks can be transferred to some PDA devices.
    • You only need your West Bloomfield library card number to check titles out.
    • For more information on Metronet Online Lending Library ebooks, go to the Quick Start Guide, General Help or take a Guided Tour.

  • Netlibrary
    • 24/7 access to over 15,000 ebook titles. Netlibrary eBooks cover a wide range of educational topics like computer programming, business, history and medicine.
    • Titles are viewed, not downloaded to your computer so you do not have to download any software to read Netlibrary eBooks. Netlibrary eBooks can also be viewed within the library on library computers.
    • No due dates. A title is available to you as long as you are actively viewing it. Once you are finished viewing the title, it goes back into the collection.
    • Create a free account using your library card number.
    • For more information on Netlibrary eBooks, go to General Ebook Help or the Quickstart Guide.

What ebook readers are compatible with Overdrive’s ebooks?

Currently, Sony’s ebook readers and Barnes and Noble’s Nook are compatible with Overdrive’s ebooks in both the PDF and the EPUB formats. Click here for a list of compatible devices.

Amazon’s Kindle is not compatible with Adobe DRM titles.

What are the steps to transferring an ebook to an ebook reader?

To transfer an Adobe PDF or EPUB format title to your device, you will need Adobe Digital Editions loaded onto your computer. You will then need to create an Adobe ID and register your computer and device. Sony users will also need a copy of Sony’s Ebook Library software.

  1. Download and install Adobe Digital Editions
  2. Create an Adobe ID
    • Open Adobe Digital Editions.
    • The Setup Assistant will appear, click Continue.
    • On the Authorize Computer screen, fill in the fields and then click Activate.
    • Your computer is now authorized.
  3. Register your ebook reader
    • Open Adobe Digital Editions.
    • Plug the device into your computer.
    • The Device Setup Assistant will appear on the screen.
    • Click Authorize Device.

Note that both Adobe Digital Editions and the eBook device must be activated with the same Adobe ID to transfer DRM-protected Adobe eBooks to the device.

How do I transfer a Title from the Computer to an ebook reader?

  • Find a title in Overdrive, check it out and download it into Adobe Digital Editions.
  • Plug the ebook reader into the computer. The reader should appear in the left hand column of Digital Editions.
  • Click on the ebook title and drag it to the device’s name in the left hand column and drop the ebook there.
  • The title should now be loaded onto your ebook reader.
