Summer Reading
Join the race and learn how to make the world a better place. This summer, the Library offers TWO great ways to keep your mind and body active.

  1. Read all summer long to earn books at our Summer's End Book Fair.
  2. Complete Summer Challenges to earn badges and points on the Leaderboard and raffle tickets to win great prizes.
Earn up to four books from the Summer’s End Book Fair based on the number of hours you read.

Read-to-Me, Youth and Teen Participants:
  • 12 hours read-1st Book
  • 24 hours read-2nd Book
  • 50 hours read-3rd Book
  • 100 hours read-4th Book

Adult Participants:
Log 12 hours of reading and you will receive a $5 gift certificate from the Friendshop, the Friends of the West Bloomfield Library book and gift shop.

To record your reading hours, log on to your account at www.westbloomfieldlibrary.org/summer, and click "Add Time." The Summer’s End Book Fair will be located in the Youth Activity Center and the Adult Information Desk at the Main Library and at the Westacres Branch from Wednesday, August 23 to Friday, September 1, 2017 during regular Library hours.
How to Join
Summer Reading runs from June 17 to September 1, 2017. Join anytime throughout the summer.

Registration:
To get started, create an account beginning May 8. You will then be ready to start reading and completing challenges when Summer Reading kicks off on June 17, 2017. Please note that each individual may only register one time.

Registration is open to:
  • Residents of West Bloomfield Township, Keego Harbor, Orchard Lake or Sylvan Lake who have a West Bloomfield Township Public Library card in good standing.
  • Non-residents of West Bloomfield Township:
    • Non-resident students and their siblings enrolled in the West Bloomfield School District.
    • Students and their siblings of Keith or Pleasant Lake Elementary Schools of the Walled Lake School District with a library card in good standing from their home library.
    • Students and their siblings of Lone Pine Elementary or West Hills Middle School of the Bloomfield Hills School District with a library card in good standing from their home library.
The Summer Challenge
Take up the Summer Challenge and extend your summer reading fun with interactive learning challenges.

Choose from dozens of exciting learning experiences throughout the summer and earn a special online badge for each challenge you complete. Find many challenges within ten categories to keep you learning and having fun all summer long.

To find Summer Challenges, log on to your account and go to "Summer Challenge."
  • Pick the challenge(s) that interest you, read the instructions, complete the challenge, get your code and enter it under "Redeem Code."
  • Your badge will appear in your virtual Summer Challenge backpack and the points will be added to your total.

NEW! Family Challenge Category
This year, the entire family can participate together in our Family category. Challenges in this category are shared across all age groups. You can start earning badges on June 17, but you will need to read 12 hours before your Summer Challenge points become active.

NEW! Two ways to earn a prize! Participants will compete against others based on groups:

  1. The Leaderboard: Earn points by reading and completing Summer Challenges and watch your score rise on the Leaderboard. The top three participants in each Leaderboard group will be eligible for a prize.
  2. The Raffle: Receive one virtual raffle ticket for every 100 points completed in the Summer Challenge. The more points redeemed and raffle tickets earned, the greater the opportunity of winning fabulous prizes in the raffle!

Winners will be notified by September 8, 2017. Limit of one prize per person.
In the event of a Leaderboard tie, the winner will be determined by a random drawing.

Read to Me
Parents: Register for the Read to Me program and help your baby, toddler or preschooler develop essential pre-reading skills. Read at least 12 hours between June 17 and September 1 and earn one book at the Summer’s End Book Fair. After completing 12 hours of reading, you may continue reading for another 12, 50 or 100 hours to earn up to four books.

Read to Me Challenge
Add fun family learning experiences to your summer activities and help your child develop early literacy and other important skills. The Read to Me Challenge booklet has simple activities for you to do with your child to help grow their early literacy skills. Share in talking, singing, reading, writing, counting and playing activities each day and mark off the challenges as you complete them. The Read to Me Challenge booklet can be found online at www.westbloomfieldlibrary.org/summer or pick up a copy at Library Information Desks.
