Programs
Some summer programs require registration. Registration opens one week before the program date. Please check program descriptions for registration details. Registered programs are limited to residents of West Bloomfield Township and the Library’s contract communities (Keego Harbor, Orchard Lake and Sylvan Lake). Non-resident students and their siblings enrolled in West Bloomfield School District, students of Keith Elementary School or Pleasant Lake Elementary School in the Walled Lake School District, and students of Lone Pine Elementary School or West Hills Middle School in the Bloomfield Hills School District with a Library card in good standing from their home library, must be registered for Summer Reading prior to signing up for special programming at the Library. Group registrations are not accepted. The Library reserves the right to limit the number of registrants to ensure a quality program. If you require special hearing equipment or a sign language interpreter for any program, please contact the Main Library at least one week prior to the program.

The Library welcomes children of all abilities, along with their parents and other caregivers. Programs and services are offered in an inclusive, nonjudgmental environment designed to engage all children and their families in literacy and learning experiences. The Library strives to be supportive and respectful of varying learning styles and capabilities while offering children of diverse abilities opportunities to grow and be successful.

SMILE! images appear in the Library’s newsletter, local newspapers, brochures, on the Library’s website or in other promotional materials. If you do not wish images to be published, please notify a member of the Library staff before the start of the program.

Write Your Own Interactive Fiction

"Interactive fiction is part narrative and part game. As an IF author, you create a story that gives the reader choices and allows them to evolve the story based on their decisions. A program called Twine will be used to write the stories and layout the choices for the reader. In Level 1, learn about the history of interactive fiction and the steps to writing a great story that keeps the reader engaged. Also learn the basics of Twine. Both sessions are the same, but repeat attendance is allowed. Teens will earn a Summer Challenge badge for attending."

"For the first time in 26 years, a rare total solar eclipse will take place in the United States on August 21. Join local NASA Solar System Ambassador Ken Bertin as he explains what eclipses are, why this one is so special and how to safely observe an eclipse. Adults and children will enjoy hearing about what will truly be considered "The Great American Eclipse". A summer reading badge will be awarded to all attendees."

Sensing Your World

"Keep your brain active over summer break at STEAM Teen Mondays. Each session will feature a hands-on project in science, technology, engineering or math that will be informative and fun. Teens earn Summer Challenge badges for attending. Measure your environment with a variety of sensors using Raspberry Pis and Arduino microcontrollers. Learn how to find temperature, humidity, light and a lot more using these devices, and re-create some of the experiments conducted on the International Space Station."
