West Bloomfield Optimist Club Sponsors Essay Contest for
Students
The Optimist
Club of West Bloomfield is encouraging area students to submit a 400-500 word
essay based on the phrase, “I’m
Unique Because…” as part of the Optimist International Essay
Contest for 2006.
To be eligible
to compete, students must be under the age of 19 and a resident of either West
Bloomfield or Walled
Lake. Students can attend
public, private, religious schools or be home schooled. This will be the first
year that cash prizes were awarded to the top 3 winners.
The top winner
will go on to compete at the State District level for a $600 college
scholarship. The winners at the State level are automatically entered in the
international competition where scholarships of up to $5,000 are awarded.
“This is a wonderful opportunity for students to tap into their
creativity and pursue scholarships at the same time,” noted Essay Contest
Co-Chair Sheryl Mitchell.
“Young students today have so
many fresh ideas about the world and their future,” said Club President Daniel Navarre. “As Optimists, it is our
goal to encourage them and do what we can to bring out the best in each of
them,” added Essay Contest
Co-Chair Dr. Howard Rosenberg.
The deadline to
submit essays was February 10, 2006. The winners were announced at the
Optimist’s Club breakfast meeting on Tuesday, February 28 at the Fiddler
Restaurant on Orchard Lake Road.
